A transformational leader with more than 15 years of executive healthcare experience, Gino R. Santorio is president and chief executive officer of Broward Health, one of the nation’s largest public healthcare systems with an operational budget of $1.4 billion and more than 8,000 employees.Since being appointed President/CEO in December 2018, Santorio has infused Broward Health with new technologies and operational changes that have positively impacted the long-term stability of the healthcare system.
Under Santorio’s leadership, Broward Health has embraced innovative solutions to healthcare needs. Genomics, telehealth and robotics have been integrated across Broward Health hospitals and international operations, resulting in significant growth in surgical services and within the Broward Health Physician Group. In less than two years, Santorio’s vision of expanding the health system’s scope of specialties and delivery models has been realized, creating greater access to high quality care for all those served by Broward Health.
Santorio has repeatedly been acknowledged as an outstanding healthcare leader on both local and national levels. Most recently he was recognized as a 2020 South Florida Business Journal Power Leader and was honored with Sun Sentinel’s 2019 Excalibur Award, as well as the 2018 South Florida Business & Wealth Up & Comer Award in the healthcare category and Becker’s Hospital Review’s Healthcare Leaders Under 40. He is also a public member of the Florida Medical Association’s Board of Governors.
Santorio is committed to giving back to the community. In response to the 2018 tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, he repurposed the Broward Health Foundation’s “Give From the Heart Employee Giving Campaign” to raise more than $113,000 through employee and community donations for all those affected. The following year, he completed the 165-mile, two-day SMART Ride on behalf of the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center to support people living with HIV/AIDS.
Santorio joined Broward Health in September 2017 as executive vice president, chief operating officer and was responsible for the daily operations of the hospital system, ensuring adherence to proper operational controls and administrative and reporting procedures. Prior to joining Broward Health, Santorio served as senior vice president and chief executive officer of Jackson North Medical Center. He has also served as COO and CFO/Hospital Compliance Officer at Spring Hill Regional Hospital in Spring Hill, Florida, and Assistant CFO at Brooksville Regional Hospital.
Santorio has a master’s degree in public administration from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University at Albany in New York, a bachelor’s degree in business leadership from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, where he graduated magna cum laude, and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), a professional certification sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). Santorio also spent a semester abroad at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.
