Medicaid is a state/federal partnership program that provides access to health care for low-income families, children, the elderly and disabled.
Medicaid serves approximately 3.3 million people in Florida, with over half being children and adolescents 20 years of age or younger.
The program is vital to the state’s ability to provide care to some of the most disadvantaged citizens. Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), Florida has the opportunity to extend health care coverage through the Medicaid program. Through PPACA, the federal government has committed to pay 100 percent of the cost of extending health coverage to a million or more uninsured Floridians for three years. Extending health care coverage would also contribute to the Florida’s economy, by creating jobs.
